Japanese defender Ko Itakura will miss the clash between his current club Ajax and his former employers FC Groningen this weekend. Fred Grim confirmed that the Ajax defender has been struggling with back problems for several weeks, having not played a game for the club in the Eredivisie since January 24th. He was on the bench for Ajax when they faced AZ a couple of matchdays ago.
Itakura joined Ajax in the summer from Bundesliga side Borussia Mรถnchengladbach, where he had spent three seasons. He had joined them from Schalke 04, the side he left the Eredivisie for in 2021. Before that, Itakura had played 59 games for FC Groningen. Since making the move to Ajax, the 29-year-old defender has played 21 games.
Ajax are currently unbeaten in five matches, but have only won one of those five. They face a Groningen side who have completely fallen away after a great start to the season. The side havenโt won since the 18th of January and are currently on a six game losing streak. They shouldnโt be in too much danger of being sucked into a relegation scrap, but it is certainly a disappointing turn of events after such a great start.
