Ajax interest in Viborg FF defender Anton Gaaei confirmed

Anton Gaaei has confirmed Ajax’s interest with young right-back from Viborg FF as the Dutch club look to bolster their squad ahead of the new Eredivisie season, Voetbal International reports.

Ajax sees Gaaei as a suitable reinforcement for the right-back position, where Mexican Jorge Sanchez did not live up to expectations last season. Gaaei has been informed of the interest from Amsterdam through his agent however, the 20-year-old defender has stated nothing has been set in stone yet.

“But that’s all I know, so I don’t know if there’s anything concrete. I will let my agent handle it further,” the Danish youth international said.

Gaaei has only been playing in Viborg’s main force for just a year, for which he came to 44 official duels. Given the chance, he certainly wouldn’t turn down the move.

He added: “It would be a really great transfer. I think anyone who would be in my shoes would at least consider it if a club like Ajax comes along. I had to pinch my arm to see if it was real. I’m happy with the interest from such a big club.”

“It would be a great step if there is a plan. I mainly want to get to play. I have big ambitions and I think I’m good enough for it. I have confidence in myself and my own qualities and I can see myself playing at Ajax. It would be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced.”

Gaaei still has a contract with Viborg until mid-2026. The Danish youth international does not think it is too early for a transfer to Ajax.

The young defender could become the first summer signing under new boss Maurice Steijn, pictured, as he begins life at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.

Steijn, 49, joined from Sparta Rotterdam shortly after completing his first full season at the Eredivisie club where he guided them to the European play-off spots after finishing sixth last season.

It is not the only potential transfer deal that could happen involving the Dutch club with Premier League side Arsenal looking to sign centre-back Jurrien Timber for a reported £30m.
