Dušan Tadić: We Need More Quality

With the Eredivisie coming to its conclusion, the title seems to be slipping further away from Ajax. Three defeats and eight draws this season have left the current Dutch champions in second place, eight points off first-place Feyenoord.

As reported by de Volkskrant, Ajax captain Dušan Tadić believes the club ‘Needs more quality…everyone can see that’. The Serbian playmaker delivered his honest thoughts after Ajax’s 4-0 win over Fortuna Sittard last Sunday. ‘It’s very disappointing and difficult,’ he said. ‘At Ajax we have to win prizes. We are not here to fight for second place, although of course, we do. We know how important the preliminary round of the Champions League is for the club’.

Tadić joined Ajax from Southampton in the summer of 2018. He’s since gone on to score 102 goals and provide 111 assists in 234 appearances for the club in all competitions. The 34-year-old has helped Ajax win three league titles and two KNVB Cups. With six games remaining, there’s a possibility that Ajax could finish the season without any silverware, although they do face PSV in the final of the KNVB Cup on April 30th.

When asked about his future at the club Tadić said ‘We will see. After this season I still have a one-year contract as a player and then a three-year contract to work as a coach in the youth or as an assistant in the first team. I feel good physically and still enjoy every day, but I also want to know what direction the club wants to take this summer. We need a strong Ajax because I want to win prizes.’

Ajax take on FC Emmen at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday before playing 3rd place PSV away from home in the Eredivisie next week. A defeat to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side could leave Ajax in 3rd place, damaging their chances of playing Champions League football next season.
