After struggling in Brussels, Justin Lonwijk is finding his form in Sittard

During the summer transfer window, Dutch midfielder Justin Lonwijk joined Anderlecht on loan from Dynamo Kyiv. Unfortunately for both parties the move did not work out. After just three games for the Brussels based club, both player and Anderlecht agreed that Lonwijk needed a new club in January. Fortuna Sittard came calling and the midfielder hopped across the border, swapping the Pro League for the Eredivisie. Nine games into his career with Fortuna and it is clear that Lonwijk is enjoying his football again.

On Saturday he grabbed his second goal for the side in a 3-1 win over struggling PEC Zwolle. Lonwijk now has two goals and two assists in eight league games, starting seven of those. While he can operate as a central midfielder, for Fortuna he is being used primarily as a right-winger, allowing him to create and look to score.

The former PSV youth player left the Netherlands back in 2021, joining Viborg FF from FC Utrecht. After winning the league with the Danish side he signed for Dynamo Kyiv in 2022 for around €1.5m. He only made 18 appearances for the side before heading back to the low countries this summer. With a contract until 2027, the future is unclear for the midfielder. There is no purchase option on the loan with Fortuna according to Transfermarkt, however after his form in recent games they may want to explore the possibilities of bringing him back again for the 2024/2025 campaign.
